Merge remote-tracking branch 'origin/maint'

* origin/maint:
  maint: address syntax-check errors.
  tests: use valgrind where appropriate
  tests: use valgrind where appropriate
  tests: don't expect $EGREP to support -w
  tests: more possible error compiler messages for "#error"
